Ronny Chieng
was born on 21 November 1985. Chieng is currently a Senior correspondent on The
Daily Show, Comedy Central. He is also the creator and lead actor on the sitcom
Ronny Chieng International Student. It premiered on ABC Australia as well as
Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to an
Malaysian Chinese family. Chieng was educated in Singapore as well as the
United States. He lived in Manchester, New Hampshire, from 1989 to 1994. Chieng
appeared with Trevor Noah at a Melbourne comedy festival in 2013. He was then
asked to be a candidate for the role of correspondent on Noah's Daily Show two
years after. He was named one the top 10 comics to watch by Variety in July of
2016. In October 2016, Chieng appeared as a guest on The Daily Show to respond
to the Jesse Watts Fox News segment that many considered racist. Chieng made
expletive-laden comments about the segment of conservative network Fox News. He
also visited New York City's Chinatown where Watters had ridiculed the
residents. The viral clip was covered in Slate and Washington Post. In his
early years, Chieng was an Singapore Sea Scout. Although he has lived in
Australia for over a decade, Chieng doesn't have citizenship or permanent residency
status in Australia. In the year 2018 Chieng claimed he was cynophobic on the
Daily Show However, he later clarified in an interview that he was "100
per cent not scared of dogs".
